The Mechanism of a Watch

A watch has multiple functions, it gives you the time, the minute, and the seconds. A  Lot of people are curious about how that is possible. How a little object can give the exact time of the day with minutes and seconds.  Watches have changed the world by making the day to day easier. Back in time people used to use the sun as a guide to see what part of the day was, they used to draw a line in the sand and see where the sun moves to see if time has passed. Now with a watch, it is easier you just have to look at your wrist to see the time.

Watches were invented in the 16th century by Peter Henlein, who was the first person to make a clock watch “As far historical records are concerned, Peter’s first clock was made in 1510, and by 1541 he was well known for his craft, and has been tasked on building not only small clocks but also big tower clock for Lichtenau castle. ”(“Peter Henlein – the First Watches.” Peter Henlein – The Inventor of the Watch, http://www.historyofwatch.com/clock-inventors/peter-henlein/.) He was a young man looking to change the world.

Each little part of the watch has its functions, inside and outside everything is different. Inside has a lot of little pieces that have different sizes and functions that I am going to tell you about more further on.

Barrel bridge

The barrel components consist of the barrel and the barrel cover which have bushings in them through which the arbor is held in place.  The barrel arbor has a small hook on it which catches the hole at the end of the mainspring and the arbor also has shoulders on which the barrel is carried and pivots on its ends that hold the barrel completely in place between the barrel bridge and pillar plate. (Carignan, D. (n.d.)). Barrel bridge

Ratchet wheel

The ratchet wheel in a watch is a toothed wheel that is fixed by a square hole in the barrel arbor. A click (pawl) prevents the ratchet wheel from turning in the unwinding direction.((n.d.). In Fondation Haute Horlogerie Foundation High Horology.)

Striking mechanism

(n.d.). In Fondation Haute Horlogerie Foundation High Horology.

A Striking Mechanism is an acoustic device that automatically or on-demand indicates the hour, and possibly quarter-hour and minutes, or sounds at a pre-set time. ((n.d.). In Fondation Haute Horlogerie Foundation High Horology.)

Balance

“What Is the Balance Wheel of a Watch?” BernardWatch Blog, 10 July 2018,

The balance wheel is part of the harmonic (or rotary) oscillating mechanism of a watch, a grouping that also includes the balance spring. The balance spring (also called the hairspring) is responsible for returning the balance wheel to the center of the watch after each tick. (BernardWatch Blog, 10 July 2018)

Hands

There are many ways to tell the time: digital watches show us the time using numbers, whereas the first mechanical clocks did not even have faces, and indicated time by chiming it. Hourglasses, candle clocks, or clepsydras are other examples. (Geelen, F., Geelen, F., Markl, X., Markl, X., Monochrome, Monochrome, . . . Nooy, R. (2021, February 17).)

The small hand gives the hours, the medium gives the minutes and the long one gives the seconds.

Crown

The crown is used to wind a watch’s mainspring, which provides the ‘energy’ and power to the watch’s internal movement. The crown is used to set the time of the watch. (What is a watch crown? (n.d.). Retrieved April 8, 2022)

Dial

A dial or sometimes referred to as the clock face is the mainframe of the timekeeper that displays the time through the use of fixed numbered digits in the form of Roman, Arabic numerals, or indexes along with moving hands. (The Watch Guide. (2018, July 26).)

Conclusion

There are different types of watches but all with the same function. All to help you keep time, not to be late to your appointments, they keep you organized. Best of all, they make you look important and fancy. From being a fashion statement to being the best friends in times of waiting for a friend/family/collegaue patiently they are all we need. Watches can be a true confidence booster item on the wrist provided you buy the right ones. (Why watches became the need for Humans. (n.d.). Retrieved April 13, 2022,)
